Wow. It’s gonna be a long but great week/weekend here in NYC as NYCC is less than 12 hours away!

I’ll be in artist alley BOOTH D17 with my pal Mr. Phil and the ISR sports team, where we will be covering the fantastic amazing con that is NY Comic Con.

I’ll be kicking off the first day with a panel on the future of Comics in the Classroom, thanks to Josh Elder of Reading with Pictures.  I’ll be there on behalf of Comic Book Classroom and really looking forward to it.

Speaking of which, I better go to sleep.  I’ll post more soon.

Great skunks! A new comic I’m creating called ‘OverGrown’ will be debuting in Denver, Colorado’s alternative weekly newspaper, ‘Westword’.

I’m very excited for this as I’ve read Westword for years and to be in the paper along with Colorado comic icon Kenny Be as well as my pal Noah Van Sciver is pretty damn awesome.

I’m creating the comic for the wonderful people over at Cultivate Colorado who have just been amazing to work with. Below are the two lead characters, Buddy and Lucie. More to come soon.

I had a blast at the Super Show 2011 in Reading PA! Nothing like seeing old friends, new friends and fans!

We started by setting up the Indie Spinner Rack booth in Izzer alley. A row solely devoted to a cache of awesome indie talent including: Jon Chad, Fred Chao, Sean Ford, Colleen Frakes, Monica Gallagher, h2Awesome(Jeff LaGreca, Jon Price), Alex Kim, Chuck McBuck, Rich Miller, Gavin Smith, & 5280 Comic Book Classroom(Bruce MaCintosh & Kevin Vinson).

And our two featured guests: Fred Van Lente and GB Tran.

I did several commissions, sold Hair Pair Comics, performed an accoustic set with my band H2awesome and broke my eating ethics for Chik Fil A! (ooops!)

And lastly, got to finally meet Jeremy Bastian! If you don’t know his work you best stop reading and go get your copy of Cursed Pirate Girl. NOW! Just a fantastic weekend and loved every minute of it.

This is the 3rd year I’ve attended Denver Comic Fest and say what you will about Denver, but their comic scene is BLOWIN’ UP!

As soon as I arrived I immediately jumped into moderating the Indie Comics Panel with Sean Anderson(I Want More Comics). And we had an awesome team to discuss standout indie comic books and new talent with Lonnie “MF” Allen, Jeff Benham, and Noah Van Sciver.

The Phranque and I also had our usual ISR /Charlito lounge as con goers first entered the show. I was so concerned, cuz unlike last year, there were no tables or exhibitors anywhere in sight. But as Saturday moved on it got bizzay, in fact, I had my 3rd best show out of all the cons and fests I’ve attended!

I recorded interviews for Indie Spinner Rack, did a few more panels, and tons of sketches and loads of cardboard commissions.

And the thing I was most proud about was the success of 5280 Comic Book Classroom at the show. We had a separate booth and gave out close to 600 brochures along with running panels where kids got to make Capt. America Shields, draw comics and acted out comics aloud.

And it all culminated in a benefit for Comic Book Classroom that included such talents as, Steve Niles, Amy Reeder, Andy Kuhn, Tyler Kirkham, , Ben Dunn,, Alex Lodermeier, and more for a hugely successful “Evening with” party that benefited the Comic Book Classroom.

The biggest part of the success really came from the amazing force that is our volunteers/team and the I Want More Comics Crew!

Thanks guys and I look forward to whats gonna come next for Denver’s Comic Scene! Oh yeah!

Charly LaGreca Cardboard Commission Hopskotch!

It was a straight trek of about 10 hours as we packed 5 of us (Bruce MacIntosh, Kevin Vinson, Matt Deragisch, and John Walker) crammed in a van armed with nothing but junk food and comic talk to get us through!

It was a ridiculously fun drive. The bad news, when we got to the insanely hip cool Aloft hotel, they screwed up our room and we suddenly found ourselves with 5 guys and ONE BED! Yeah, it got very interesting to say the least.

On Saturday, we drove to the Kansas City convention Center, which turned out to be the wrong place. So we sped over the The Overland Trade Center and arrived just in time to set up our our booth for 5280 Comic Book Classroom where I was appearing as guest artist to hopefully draw people to the booth or at least do some free sketches! Though, they didn’t need me cuz the guys rocked it.

I did do a bunch of free sketches as well as cardboard commissions which are always a blast. And I even got to do one for a really cool artist from Hallmark cards. On Sunday, I ran out of cardboard so i had to go digging through the dumpsters and I ended up getting pizza sauce all over my arm. The cost of using cardboard. (I was hungry anyway.)

We also met all kinds of folks and spread news about the program. This was our first show promoting 5280CBC and the response was incredible. Almost every pro was interested in helping in SOME capacity. And it didn’t stop there, cuz we ended up meeting Kara-Zorel AKA Supergirl, who was an inspiration and lived up to her name outside of the convention, as she frequently appears as Supergirl at hospitals and schools in the KC region. We’re hoping to find a way to include costumed heroes with the program at some point so it was great to meet her.

I also did several interviews for Indie Spinner Rack including Darren Neely(The Prospector). And the highpoint of this show was definitely the bar on Saturday night. Small shows like this are the best cuz the artists have nowhere to go, so they stick around the hotel bar. I got to talk with tons of people and finished the night off hanging with Matt Kindt until the bartender wouldn’t let us have anymore of those crazy little wasabi M&M’s!

The show ended, I spilled my ink bottle all over myself and the table, we hit the road, no KC BBQ to be had, backs aching from 3 days on the floor, but we drove straight through never stopping as the excitement charged us until we rolled back into Denver, about 4am bleary eyed.

It really is the friends and the people that make the show!
